Birmingham, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : England has achieved a significant milestone by defeating Pakistan in the third Test held at Edgbaston, Birmingham. This victory strengthens their position in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table. Following this win, England remains in sixth place but has improved its win percentage compared to Sri Lanka.
Joe Root and Jordan Cox led the charge with half-centuries, helping the team chase down a target of 130 runs, securing an 8-wicket victory. With this win, England completed a clean sweep of the three-match series against Pakistan, marking the first time they have achieved this feat on home soil.
While England’s chances of reaching the WTC final next year at The Oval appear slim, they have solidified their sixth place among the nine teams. They have surpassed Sri Lanka and are closing in on India, a team that has reached the finals twice.
Before the third Test, England faced a deduction of 14 points due to slow over-rate issues, leaving them with 62 points from 15 matches and a win percentage of 34.44. The victory at Edgbaston increased their total points to 74 from 16 matches, raising their win percentage to 38.54, although they still trail behind India, which boasts a win percentage of 51.51.
Pakistan’s situation worsened following their defeat in Birmingham. They were already at the bottom of the standings, and their win percentage has dropped from 16.67% to 14.81%. The team has only managed to win two matches and lost eight points due to slow over-rate penalties.
Australia currently leads the WTC standings with 96 points and a win percentage of 80, despite a recent draw against Bangladesh. South Africa holds second place with 36 points from four matches and a win percentage of 75, while New Zealand ranks third with a win percentage of 72.22 from six matches.
Bangladesh, following a victory in Darwin, has a win percentage of 55.56 and occupies the fourth position. India, after winning a two-match series against Sri Lanka 1-0, stands fifth with 68 points from 11 matches and a win percentage of 51.52. Sri Lanka and West Indies are positioned seventh and eighth, respectively, with win percentages of 33.33% and 20.83%.
