Indias Strategic Diplomacy Shines at 18th BRICS Summit

New Delhi, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : India’s comprehensive strategy has yielded significant diplomatic success at the 18th BRICS Summit, held recently in New Delhi. A report indicates that India effectively balanced the diverse interests of member countries while promoting multilateralism, sending a clear message about its strategic ascent on the global stage.

According to the “India Narrative” report, New Delhi adopted a strategy during the summit that prevented the BRICS platform from becoming a battleground for geopolitical conflicts or a competition between major powers like Russia and China.

The report outlines that India’s approach was anchored in three key shifts. First, it aimed to make multilateralism practical by advancing reforms in global governance institutions. Second, India sought to strengthen BRICS as a strategic platform that enhances cooperation and resilience. Third, it aimed to position India as a key global player capable of offering sustainable and strategic options to tackle global crises, including diversifying supply chains and enhancing economic security through inclusivity.

Intensive behind-the-scenes negotiations effectively showcased India’s policy of “strategic de-hyphenation” and “strategic autonomy.” By focusing on practical agendas via de-hyphenation, India sought to move BRICS beyond conflicts and geopolitical rivalries, while economic cooperation remained central through strategic autonomy that harmonized the interests of various nations.

This strategic balance helped forge consensus despite political differences and amplified the voice of the Global South in the joint declaration. India had previously employed a similar strategy during the G-20 Summit amid the backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Before the summit, concerns were raised about the potential inability to reach an agreement on the joint declaration. However, India ensured consensus by balancing national and global interests. The report also noted that following India’s recent signing of the SCO declaration, the BRICS declaration included strong condemnation of military attacks on Iran and criticism of unilateral Western economic sanctions.

One of India’s most significant diplomatic victories at the summit concerned terrorism. The BRICS declaration unequivocally condemned all forms and manifestations of terrorism, specifically mentioning the Pakistan-backed terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that occurred in April 2025.

The declaration condemned the Pahalgam attack “in the strongest terms,” expressing concerns over cross-border terrorism, the movement of terrorists, financing of terrorism, and safe havens. It also reiterated a “zero tolerance” policy, rejecting double standards in the fight against terrorism.
