New Delhi, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : Robin Singh, a name synonymous with exceptional fielding in Indian cricket, was born on September 14, 1963, in Trinidad and Tobago. He moved to Chennai, India, in 1984 with his parents, initially to pursue his education. However, his passion for cricket intensified after arriving in India. Singh completed his studies at Madras University and gradually made a name for himself in club cricket, participating in various leagues during his college years.
His breakthrough came in 1989 when he was selected for the Indian national team. Singh made his One Day International (ODI) debut against the West Indies, but his performance was modest, scoring just three runs and bowling only 1.2 overs. Following this series, he was dropped from the team, and it took him seven years to return to international cricket.
Singh played his third ODI in 1996 against Australia, ultimately participating in a total of 136 ODIs for India. Over his career, he scored 2,336 runs at an average of 25.95, including one century, and took 69 wickets. One of his most memorable performances came during the Independence Cup final in 1998 against Pakistan, where he scored 82 runs and formed a crucial partnership of 179 runs with Sourav Ganguly. This match was pivotal, as India successfully chased down a target of 315 runs to defeat Pakistan.
Known for his agile fielding, Singh also made headlines during the 1999 World Cup with a determined 75-run innings against Australia. Despite his prowess in ODIs, he struggled to establish himself in Test cricket, featuring in just one match where he scored 27 runs. From 2007 to 2009, Singh served as the fielding coach for the Indian team, further contributing to the sport.
