Varanasi, March 3: The grand conclusion of the eleven-day national Saras Mela took place in Varanasi, marking a significant boost for women’s self-reliance in Uttar Pradesh. Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya emphasized that women from self-help groups are the true strength of the rural economy. The government’s aim is to transform one crore women into ‘Lakhpati Didis’ and eventually establish them as ‘Crorepati Women.’
Addressing the closing ceremony at Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, the Deputy Chief Minister stated that when women are empowered, families, societies, and the nation become stronger. The Saras Mela showcased that with the right platform and opportunities, rural women can not only achieve self-sufficiency but also compete in larger markets. The fair saw remarkable sales of decorative items, food products, brass crafts, pickles, leather goods, artificial jewelry, textiles, carpets, jute, and moong products.
During the event, symbolic checks totaling ₹10.60 crore were distributed to 703 self-help groups under the community investment fund, along with a revolving fund for 20 groups. Additionally, e-rickshaws were presented to two groups. The Deputy Chief Minister honored insurance workers Meena Devi and Pratibha Devi, along with Lakhpati women Sharmila Devi and Lakshmi Verma, by presenting them with certificates.
Lakhimpur Kheri received the first prize for the highest sales, while Mirzapur secured the second prize. The best stall decoration award went to Mardan Shah’s group from Ghazipur. The program also featured workshops on packaging, branding, and marketing to enhance the market competitiveness of the groups. The Deputy Chief Minister announced that the Saras Mela will continue to be organized in the future, allowing women from various districts to learn from each other and elevate their enterprises to new heights.
