New Delhi, August 8: England is set to play a three-match Test series against Pakistan. The team has announced its squad for the first two Tests, but complications have arisen following the announcement. Opener Emilio Gay, who plays for Durham, has injured his right shoulder. Due to the injury, Gay had to retire hurt. If his condition is serious, England will need to find a new opener.
Gay was taken off the field after scoring 9 runs off 17 balls due to the injury. A team spokesperson confirmed that he would not continue in the match. A scan will determine the severity of his injury.
Emilio was included in the England squad in place of opener Jack Crawley for the series against New Zealand, where he scored two half-centuries.
Before Gay’s injury, England had already suffered a setback with Jacob Bethel being ruled out of the Pakistan Test series due to a right knee injury. Additionally, the retirement of Ben Stokes has further weakened the England Test team.
Currently, there are no other options to open alongside Ben Duckett. Ollie Pope is the only extra batsman in the squad. Lawrence’s last stint as an opener was in 2024 against Sri Lanka, when Crawley was sidelined due to a broken finger.
If Gay’s injury proves to be serious, potential replacements from Durham include Ben McKinney or Glamorgan’s Asa Tribe.
