Port Blair, February 24: A major aviation disaster was averted in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Tuesday morning when a Pawan Hans helicopter had to make an emergency landing in the sea shortly after takeoff.

The incident occurred shortly after the helicopter took off from Sri Vijaypuram, located in the northern part of Middle Andaman Island. There were seven people on board, and fortunately, all were rescued safely with no reported injuries.

According to a company spokesperson, the incident happened around 9:30 AM. It was described as a ‘short landing’ near Mayabunder. The helicopter, carrying two crew members and five passengers, encountered technical difficulties just before landing, causing it to touch down approximately 300 meters before the runway in the sea.

Authorities confirmed that the helicopter was safely brought down, and a rescue operation was promptly initiated. All passengers and crew members were successfully evacuated.

This incident comes just a day after a tragic plane crash in Chatra, Jharkhand, which claimed the lives of seven people. The air ambulance, operated by Redbird Airways Private Limited, crashed while en route from Ranchi to Delhi, falling in a forested area of the Simaria region.

The deceased included Captain Vivek Vikas Bhagat, Captain Sarwajdeep Singh, Dr. Vikas Kumar Gupta, Sachin Kumar Mishra, Sanjay Kumar, Archana Devi, and Dhuru Kumar.

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the aircraft took off from Ranchi at 7:11 PM. Contact was established with Kolkata at 7:34 PM, but both communication and radar signals were lost approximately 100 nautical miles southeast of Varanasi.

Investigations into both incidents are ongoing, and aviation safety standards are under review.
