Elon Musk Accuses OpenAI and Sam Altman of Betraying Non-Profit Principles in Court Testimony

New Delhi, April 29: Tesla CEO Elon Musk has testified in a significant ongoing case against OpenAI. He claims that the company and its CEO, Sam Altman, have shifted their focus from their initial non-profit mission to profit-making.

Reports indicate that this case is being heard in a court in Oakland, California. Musk argues that OpenAI has deviated from its original goal of creating safe AI for the benefit of humanity, transforming instead into a profit-driven entity.

In his testimony, Musk stated that he initially supported OpenAI with the belief that it would operate like a non-profit organization, prioritizing transparency and safety in AI development.

The world’s richest person expressed concern that if the court rules in favor of OpenAI, it could undermine the spirit of philanthropy in the United States. He mentioned that his interest in OpenAI stemmed from his belief that Google was not paying enough attention to AI safety.

Musk warned that a ruling favoring OpenAI could weaken the principles of charitable organizations in the future. He also informed the court that he played a significant role in the company’s early development, including attracting talent and establishing connections with technology partners.

On the other hand, OpenAI has defended its actions, stating that changes in its structure and the acceptance of external investments were necessary due to the high costs associated with advanced AI research. The company asserts that its non-profit segment remains under control.

This dispute highlights the growing rift between Musk and OpenAI, which he co-founded in 2015. Musk departed from the company in 2018, after which OpenAI established a commercial unit and secured funding from various investors, including Microsoft.

Since then, OpenAI has become a major player in the global AI landscape, particularly due to the success of its chatbot, ChatGPT. Musk later founded his own AI company, xAI, and has taken legal steps regarding changes at OpenAI. However, he has stated that any financial compensation he receives will not be for personal gain.

The court’s decision is expected in the coming weeks, which could significantly impact the operational methods and funding models of AI companies.
