Kolkata, March 5: Humayun Kabir, the suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA from the Bharatpur assembly constituency in West Bengal’s minority-dominated Murshidabad district, announced on Wednesday evening that he has received a notification from the Election Commission (EC) granting preliminary approval for the registration of his newly formed political party.
Kabir revealed that the party will be named “Aam Janata Unnayan Party” (AJUP). The party plans to field candidates in several assembly seats during the crucial elections scheduled for later this year. Initially, Kabir proposed the name “Janata Unnayan Party” (JUP) to the Election Commission. The office of the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal also recommended this proposed name to the EC headquarters for approval.
However, the commission later advised Kabir to change the party’s name, as a political party with the same name was already registered. Consequently, Kabir renamed his party to “Aam Janata Unnayan Party” (AJUP). Despite receiving initial approval, it will take some time for the party to obtain its final and official registration. As part of this process, public notices will need to be published in newspapers to inform the public about the proposed registration of the new political party.
If no objections are raised within the stipulated timeframe, the final registration will be granted. An insider from the commission indicated that if no issues arise, AJUP’s final registration could be completed within two weeks.
Humayun Kabir was suspended from the Trinamool Congress after he announced a foundation stone-laying ceremony for a proposed mosque in Beldanga, Murshidabad district. Kabir stated that the mosque would be constructed in the architectural style of the original Babri Mosque in Ayodhya, which was demolished on December 6, 1992.
