Kolkata, February 13: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has appointed retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer N.K. Mishra as a special observer to review the ongoing special intensive voter list revision in West Bengal.
In a notification, Under Secretary M.L. Meena instructed Mishra to exercise his authority to ensure strict adherence to the ECI’s guidelines for voter list revision.
The directive from the Election Commission emphasized that as a special observer, Mishra must ensure that the special intensive revision process is conducted in accordance with the instructions issued by the Commission from time to time. He is required to visit West Bengal periodically to monitor the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR), the preparations for voting, and the conduct of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, providing recommendations for necessary actions to the Commission.
The Election Commission clarified that Mishra’s visits to West Bengal will be coordinated with the state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Manoj Kumar Agarwal, who will provide all necessary materials, facilities, and protocol arrangements.
Furthermore, the directive stated that Mishra is prohibited from issuing any commendation letters to voter registration officers or any other election-related officials while acting as a special observer or afterward. Should he feel the need to commend any election-related official, he must submit a proposal to the Commission with full justification.
The extended deadline for hearing claims and objections regarding the format of the voter list will conclude on Saturday. The verification of documents submitted during the hearing sessions will continue until February 21. The final voter list is set to be published on February 28, marking the conclusion of the voter list revision process that began in December of last year.
