Visakhapatnam, 12 December: Eight pilgrims lost their lives and several others were injured when a private travel bus plunged into a gorge in Alluri Sitharama Raju district of Andhra Pradesh on Friday morning.

The accident took place on the Chittoor-Naredumilli Ghat Road when the driver reportedly lost control of the bus at a sharp turn. After hitting the safety wall, the bus fell into the gorge.

The bus was carrying 37 passengers, including two drivers, and was heading towards Annavaram.

According to information, all passengers were from Chittoor district. They were returning to the Annavaram temple in East Godavari district after visiting the Bhadrachalam temple in Telangana. The accident site had no mobile network coverage, causing a delay in informing the police at Mothugunta.

Police reached the spot and launched a rescue operation. Eight bodies were recovered from the site, and the injured were admitted to a hospital in Chittoor. Five police vehicles and three ambulances were deployed to transport the injured.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over the accident. He spoke with officials about the rescue and relief efforts and directed them to ensure the best medical care for the injured.

Home Minister V. Anita and Tribal Welfare and Women & Child Welfare Minister G. Sandhya Rani rushed to the accident site. They consulted the district collector and police superintendent of Alluri Sitharama Raju district and instructed them to provide all possible assistance to the victims.

Expressing concern over the rising number of road accidents, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu had ordered a third-party audit last month to identify causes of accidents.

Addressing the Road Safety Council meeting, the Chief Minister noted that so far this year, 15,462 road accidents in the state have resulted in 6,433 deaths.

Officials reported that 79 percent of accidents occur due to overspeeding, three percent due to wrong-side driving, and one percent due to alcohol consumption and mobile phone use. Andhra Pradesh ranks eighth in the country for road accidents.
