Education Ministry and IIT Roorkee Deny JEE Advanced Data Leak Claims

New Delhi, June 5: The Central Ministry of Education dismissed allegations of a data leak concerning the results of the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) on Friday. The ministry condemned attempts to undermine public trust in the examination conducted by IIT Roorkee for over 179,000 students.

In a message on the social media platform X, the ministry stated, “There have been numerous misleading and factually incorrect reports regarding data leaks and privacy violations concerning students taking the JEE (Advanced) exam.”

The ministry reiterated, based on clarifications from IIT Roorkee, that no sensitive information was compromised. It assured that the examination results, scores, and candidate information remain completely secure and intact.

IIT Roorkee also refuted claims of a data leak on social media, addressing concerns raised by prospective students and their parents. The institution described the deliberate misrepresentation of a technical incident as “very concerning” and emphasized the need to discourage such actions.

The JEE Advanced exam serves as a qualifying test for candidates seeking admission to 23 prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

IIT Roorkee stated on social media, “Claims of data leaks and privacy violations affecting millions of JEE (Advanced) candidates are misleading and factually incorrect.”

The institution clarified that the information circulating on social media is deceptive and does not accurately represent what occurred. There is an ongoing attempt to spread misinformation that is far from the truth.

On June 2, the institution made rapid technical adjustments to assist candidates facing difficulties accessing their admit card data and to ensure a smooth registration process. These adjustments briefly caused a minor misconfiguration in the cloud storage component.

An ethical hacker, Rylan Anil, identified this misconfiguration and reported potential access to the relevant database. The issue was promptly rectified, and access to the data was restricted. The affected storage was in ‘read-only’ mode, meaning no data could be edited or deleted. Analysis of cloud access logs confirmed that no bulk downloads occurred, with access limited to less than 0.05 percent of the read-only data.

The institution emphasized that no sensitive information was compromised, nor was there any large-scale data extraction. This incident did not impact examination results, including candidates’ scores, ranks, and categories.

According to the institution, “IIT Roorkee is fully committed to maintaining the integrity, security, and transparency of the JEE (Advanced) and Joint Seat Allocation Authority counseling processes.”

The institution expressed concern over the deliberate misrepresentation of this technical incident and the erosion of public trust in the examination system. The JEE (Advanced) team is dedicated to supporting every candidate through a smooth and secure admission process at IITs and IISc.

These rumors regarding JEE Advanced surfaced around the time of the National Testing Agency’s earlier decision to cancel NEET-UG 2026 due to a paper leak, with a rescheduled exam set for June 21.
