Kolkata, April 26: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted significant raids in Kolkata on Sunday as part of the investigation into the ‘Sona Pappu Syndicate.’ The operations targeted three locations, including the homes of two businessmen in the Anandapur and Alipore areas.
According to ED officials, this action is part of the inquiry into the criminal syndicate associated with Sona Pappu, also known as Biswajit Poddar. The ED had previously arrested Sona Pappu’s close associate, Joy Kamdar, who is currently in custody.
Reports indicate that the addresses of the businessmen were uncovered during the questioning of Joy Kamdar. On Sunday morning, multiple ED teams, accompanied by central forces, departed from the CGO Complex in Salt Lake and initiated investigations at various sites.
Sources reveal that a search is ongoing at a businessman’s residence in a prominent area of Anandapur, while another team has reached Alipore. Investigative agencies are trying to determine whether these businessmen have any financial ties to Joy Kamdar’s investments.
An ED official stated that these raids are part of a money laundering investigation. Sona Pappu faces serious allegations, including attempted murder and extortion, with multiple cases registered against him.
It is reported that Sona Pappu operates his syndicate in the Kasba and Ballygunge areas of South Kolkata. He is also the main accused in the Golpark violence case that occurred in February. Although he is currently at large, he remains active on social media, accusing investigative agencies of harassing his family.
Additionally, Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas has been implicated in this case, with allegations of financial transactions involving Joy Kamdar. The ED had previously raided his residence earlier this month.
Notably, these actions are taking place amid ongoing assembly elections in the state. The first phase of voting has already been completed for 152 seats, while voting for the remaining 142 seats is scheduled for April 29.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Kolkata on Sunday, where he will conduct a roadshow in North Kolkata.
The ruling Trinamool Congress has raised concerns about the increasing activity of central agencies during the elections, alleging that the central government is using these agencies for political gain.
