New Delhi, May 6: The ECINET app, developed by the Election Commission of India, has played a crucial role in enhancing the transparency, security, and efficiency of the electoral process during the 2026 Assembly and by-elections. This robust IT platform has streamlined the entire electoral mechanism through real-time monitoring, rapid reporting, and improved coordination.
Since its official launch in January 2026, the usage of the ECINET app has surged, with over 100 million downloads to date. The app was previously tested successfully during the Bihar Assembly elections in November 2025.
On the voting days of April 9, 23, and 29, 2026, the app recorded more than 9.83 crore hits. On counting day, May 4, 2026, it achieved an average of 3 crore hits per minute, showcasing its high capacity and reliability.
In terms of cybersecurity, ECINET demonstrated strong performance by neutralizing over 6.8 million malicious cyber attacks from both domestic and international sources on counting day. These attacks targeted several critical platforms, including the election results portal.
To further enhance security, a QR code-based photo identification system was implemented for the first time across all states and union territories through ECINET. On counting day, over 320,000 QR codes were generated, ensuring that only authorized personnel could access counting centers and preventing any unauthorized activities. ECINET has set new standards for transparency, security, and efficiency in the electoral process.
Following the announcement of Assembly election results, on May 5, the Election Commission of India (ECI) sent notifications to the governors of Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal regarding the formation of new assemblies. The terms of the assemblies in these four states and one union territory will end between May 7 and June 15. The ECI’s notifications pave the way for leaders of the winning parties in each state and union territory to claim the formation of the government before the previous assembly’s term concludes.
