Ahmedabad police and customs officials conducted a major operation at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Sunday, seizing hybrid marijuana valued at approximately Rs 12.5 crore. Four passengers were arrested in connection with the haul, which is believed to be linked to an international drug trafficking syndicate.
According to authorities, the group was using air routes to smuggle prohibited narcotics into India. Special intelligence inputs had alerted officials about possible drug trafficking from Southeast Asia to India. Based on this information, passengers on a flight arriving from Bangkok to Ahmedabad were thoroughly checked.
During the inspection, suspicious items were found in the luggage of four travellers, leading to a detailed search. Senior customs officers confirmed that a large quantity of high-quality hybrid marijuana was recovered, concealed in plastic packets. The estimated international market value of the seized drugs is around Rs 12.5 crore.
Officials explained that hybrid marijuana is significantly more potent and expensive than regular cannabis and is completely banned under Indian law. The four accused were detained at the scene and later formally arrested. Preliminary investigations revealed that one suspect is a resident of Vadodara, while the other three hail from Punjab.
Investigative agencies are probing the purpose behind bringing this consignment into Gujarat and identifying all individuals involved in the active supply chain. A police officer stated that initial findings indicate plans to distribute the narcotics across major Indian cities, where demand is rising.
Authorities are also examining the suspects’ travel history, financial transactions, and potential international connections to dismantle the larger trafficking network. The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Forensic analysis of the seized substances is underway, and coordination with central agencies has begun to investigate possible links to international drug syndicates.
This seizure adds to a series of significant drug busts at Ahmedabad airport in recent days. Earlier this month, customs officials recovered hydroponic cannabis worth nearly Rs 8 crore from a passenger arriving from Bangkok. In another case, 3.9 kilograms of hydroponic marijuana brought from Bangkok were seized, resulting in an arrest under the NDPS Act.
Officials emphasized that due to continuous attempts to smuggle drugs via international flights, surveillance and intelligence-based operations at the airport are being intensified to effectively curb such activities.
