Drug Trafficker Who Jumped Parole Arrested After Five Years on the Run

New Delhi, October 12 (Daily Kiran) : The Delhi Police’s Crime Branch has arrested a convicted drug trafficker who had been on the run for nearly five years after failing to return to prison following a parole granted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Ajay Jharwal Torela, had been convicted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. He was released on parole in 2021 but did not surrender after the parole period ended, leading to his flight from justice.

According to the Crime Branch, Torela was initially arrested in 2011 in Malviya Nagar, where police seized approximately 161.2 kilograms of cannabis from him. Following his conviction, he had been serving his sentence until his parole release.

Police officials reported that after being released, Torela frequently changed his location and lived a low-profile life to avoid capture. His activities were closely monitored using both technical and human intelligence sources.

Under the direction of DCP Harsh Indora, a team led by Inspector Satish Malik, along with SI Devender Kadiyan and HC Ajay, initiated a search for Torela. Acting on a tip-off, they set up surveillance in the Chander Vihar area.

The police spotted Torela approaching near Gali No. 7 in Himgiri Enclave. When he noticed the police, he attempted to flee but was apprehended after a brief chase.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Torela had been working as an auto-rickshaw driver. His identity and criminal record were verified through Tihar Jail, after which he was returned to prison to complete his remaining sentence of approximately two and a half years.

Police records indicate that Torela has two prior criminal cases against him, including theft and violations of the NDPS Act. The Crime Branch stated that this arrest is part of a special operation targeting fugitives and parole violators.

Delhi Police emphasized that the successful apprehension of this long-term fugitive was made possible through continuous intelligence gathering, technical surveillance, and ground-level operations.
