Dolphins Hire Jon-Eric Sullivan as GM, Dim Prospects for John Harbaugh

The Miami Dolphins have appointed Jon-Eric Sullivan as their new general manager, raising questions about their pursuit of John Harbaugh for the head coach position.

Sullivan, formerly the vice president of player personnel for the Green Bay Packers, brings extensive experience from his long tenure with the Packers. However, unlike other candidates, Sullivan does not have a known connection with Harbaugh, which is significant given the NFL’s emphasis on existing relationships in hiring decisions.

Before Sullivan’s hiring, another finalist, Chad Alexander—assistant general manager of the Los Angeles Chargers—had ties to Harbaugh, which had fueled optimism about Miami securing the coach. With Sullivan now in charge, that optimism has lessened.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero identified four potential coaching candidates linked to Sullivan through Green Bay: Mike McCarthy, Jeff Hafley, Adam Stenavich, and Anthony Campanile. Notably, Harbaugh was not mentioned among these names.

While the Dolphins are set to begin their head coaching search immediately, reports indicate that Harbaugh is not a primary target. ESPN’s Jeff Darlington commented that Miami remains interested in Harbaugh but is not “fixated” on hiring him.

Meanwhile, ESPN’s Jordan Raanan highlighted that Harbaugh has expressed interest in the New York Giants job, partly due to the presence of quarterback Jaxson Dart. The Giants are reportedly eager to secure Harbaugh’s services.

Given these developments, it appears the Dolphins face strong competition for Harbaugh, with other teams offering more attractive opportunities. It is likely that Miami will consider coaching candidates other than Harbaugh going forward.
