Rome, August 26: A new study suggests that when your pet dog blinks while staring at you, it may not just be a way to keep its eyes moist. Researchers from the University of Parma in Italy found that dogs tend to blink more frequently in response to their owners compared to strangers.
The study involved 35 different dog breeds, which were shown videos lasting 40 seconds each. The videos featured their owners and two unfamiliar individuals. In one video, the people blinked every three seconds, while in another, they maintained a steady gaze without blinking. The findings were published in the Royal Society Open Science Journal on August 26, 2026.
Researchers observed that dogs blinked significantly more when their owners blinked, indicating a strong social connection. However, there was no noticeable change in their blinking behavior when watching strangers blink.
This suggests that dogs are highly attuned to subtle cues from human faces and may respond differently based on the social significance of the person in front of them.
Despite these findings, scientists caution against assuming that every blink carries a specific message. The study does not prove that every blink from a dog has a defined meaning.
According to researcher Chiara Canori, blinking is a natural action essential for eye protection and moisture retention. However, social contexts may also influence this behavior. It is possible that blinking serves as a subtle signal of attention or connection between dogs and their owners.
