Chennai, August 4: The DMK Youth Wing has strongly condemned the arrest of Udhayanidhi Stalin, the Leader of the Opposition and party secretary, in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. The organization accused the Tamilaga Vetria Kadagam (TVK) government of resorting to police action to evade questions regarding the Cauvery water dispute.
In a statement following Stalin’s arrest, the Youth Wing asserted that this action demonstrates the government’s inability to politically address the issues raised by the opposition. They claimed that the case filed against him is politically motivated.
The Youth Wing dismissed allegations that the former Deputy Chief Minister made obscene or objectionable remarks during a public speech in Thanjavur. They stated that he did not mention any individual specifically, and that his political rivals are deliberately misinterpreting his comments.
According to the Youth Wing, the government acted against Udhayanidhi Stalin just as he was preparing to question them on several issues, particularly the Cauvery water dispute, in the Assembly.
The statement alleged that his arrest was intended to prevent the Leader of the Opposition from confronting the government in the upcoming Assembly session and to divert public attention from the pressing questions surrounding the Cauvery water issue.
Targeting Chief Minister Vijay, the Youth Wing claimed that his films contain dialogues that are more objectionable than the accusations against Udhayanidhi Stalin. They pointed out that Vijay’s previous film also included profanity and questioned why the TVK is selectively outraged over political speeches.
The organization also noted that when BJP leader Nainar Nagendran allegedly made comments linking an actor to the Chief Minister, the ruling party remained silent. They questioned why the TVK did not respond with similar intensity to those remarks.
The Youth Wing emphasized that criticism of the government and questions regarding significant issues in Tamil Nadu cannot be suppressed through arrests or criminal cases.
Reiterating their support for Udhayanidhi Stalin, the organization stated that the controversy surrounding his Thanjavur speech is being used to divert political debate away from the Cauvery dispute. They accused the government of attempting to weaken the opposition ahead of the Assembly session and affirmed that the DMK will continue to raise state issues, regardless of the government’s actions.
