Varanasi, April 4: In the sacred city of Kashi, it is believed that Lord Shiva resides in every particle. Each temple, big or small, has its own unique story and significance that strengthens the faith of its devotees. One such temple, nestled in the narrow lanes of Varanasi, is dedicated to Batuk Bhairav, who is said to alleviate problems related to offspring and other hardships merely through darshan (viewing).
The Batuk Bhairav Temple, though small, is immensely powerful. Located in the winding alleys of the Bhelupur area, it offers devotees safety, relief, and strength. Batuk Bhairav, also known as Bal Visheshwar, is believed to be the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Kali.
Local legends narrate that Batuk Bhairav manifested in a child form to defeat the demon Abad. According to the tale, Abad was granted a boon that no one could harm him, except for a child. In Kashi, Batuk Bhairav took on this role and became the protector of devotees. The idol of Batuk Bhairav in the temple depicts him as a child, often surrounded by numerous dogs, which are considered his vehicle.
The image of Batuk Bhairav in Kashi embodies both gentleness and formidable power. A unique feature of the temple is its eternal lamp, which is believed to possess miraculous properties. Devotees use the oil from this lamp for healing wounds or treating animal bites. The temple grounds are frequented by many dogs that roam freely without causing harm, especially active during evening aarti (rituals) and throughout the day.
Another distinctive aspect of the temple is that devotees offer toffees, biscuits, and toys as prasad (offerings). These items are considered dear to the child-like deity. Many visit the temple seeking relief from issues related to offspring, safety, and increased courage, often showing affection towards the deity. There is also a havan kund (sacred fire pit) where people perform rituals.
The Batuk Bhairav Temple is open daily from 5 AM to 12 PM and from 4 PM to 10 PM. Timings may vary on special occasions. The temple sees a significant influx of devotees on Sundays, Tuesdays, and during Bhairav Ashtami or the deity’s birthday celebrations.
Located about 3 to 4 kilometers from the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Batuk Bhairav Temple can be easily accessed via auto-rickshaws, taxis, or e-rickshaws from Varanasi Junction or Cantt Station. Visitors need to walk approximately 200-250 meters from the main road to reach the temple due to the narrow lanes.
