Glasgow, July 28: Indian weightlifter Nirupama Devi faced a disappointing outcome in the women’s 63-kilogram category at the Commonwealth Games 2026. On Tuesday, she was unable to complete the ‘Clean and Jerk’ round and was marked as ‘Did Not Finish’ (DNF).
Nirupama, a medal contender, successfully lifted 93 kilograms in the ‘Snatch’ but failed all three attempts at 123 kilograms in the ‘Clean and Jerk.’ This performance made her the first Indian weightlifter to not secure a win at the Commonwealth Games 2026. India has previously won seven medals in weightlifting, including one gold, four silver, and two bronze.
In the ‘Snatch,’ Nirupama struggled initially but succeeded in her second attempt. However, she could not lift 95 kilograms in her final attempt. The ‘Clean and Jerk’ round proved to be even more challenging, as she failed all three attempts. Despite the presence of three-time gold medalist Mirabai Chanu and the continuous support from her teammates, Nirupama ended up disappointed.
Former Olympic champion Maude Charron from Canada won gold in the women’s 63-kilogram weightlifting event, setting a Games record with a total lift of 232 kilograms. She achieved records in both the ‘Snatch’ (102 kilograms) and ‘Clean and Jerk’ (130 kilograms).
England’s Sarah Davis-Smel secured silver with a total lift of 217 kilograms (95+122 kilograms), while Nauru’s Family-Christy Note claimed bronze with a total of 216 kilograms (100+116 kilograms).
Earlier on Monday, India celebrated three medals in weightlifting. Valluri Ajay Babu narrowly missed out on a gold medal in the men’s 79-kilogram category, finishing just 1 kilogram behind Malaysia’s Muhammad Eri Hidayat. Gyaneshwari Yadav won silver in the women’s 53-kilogram event, and Bindyarani Devi earned bronze in the women’s 58-kilogram category, marking her second consecutive medal at the Commonwealth Games. Mirabai Chanu also secured India’s first gold medal at CWG 2026.
