New Delhi, February 11: Dimple Yadav, a Member of Parliament from the Samajwadi Party (SP), criticized Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for discussing the Bengal elections during the budget session in the Lok Sabha.
In a media interaction, Yadav stated that Sitharaman’s comments were influenced by the upcoming elections in Bengal. While she addressed crimes against women in Bengal, she neglected similar issues in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and Odisha. Yadav emphasized that her remarks were one-sided. He expressed concern that the recent trade deal with the United States could adversely affect Indian farmers and small entrepreneurs.
Additionally, SP MP Priya Saroj remarked that the budget failed to consider farmers’ interests and did not address the welfare of ordinary citizens. She pointed out that while the budget contained grand statements, it lacked actionable plans. Saroj expressed disappointment, stating that the budget did not cater to the needs of youth or the common man. The party had hoped for answers to questions posed by their national president, but none were provided.
Saroj further stated that the budget did not meet their expectations, describing it as merely a numbers-based and election-oriented budget. She noted that while Kolkata, West Bengal, and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee were frequently mentioned, the responses given were unsatisfactory. Key issues such as education, health, agriculture, and employment were overlooked, prompting protests from their party.
SP MP Anand Bhadauria added that they did not walk out of the session. They listened to the entire speech by the Finance Minister, but found the budget presentation hollow, reflecting a lack of substantial responses. He accused Sitharaman of delivering a political speech rather than addressing the concerns of opposition MPs, suggesting that she was more focused on garnering votes for her party than on addressing pressing issues.
