Ujjain, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : The Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain hosted a vibrant Bhasma Aarti on September 15, marking the third and fourth dates of the Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha. A significant number of devotees gathered to witness this divine ceremony.
Early Tuesday morning, following the directives of Lord Veerabhadra, the temple doors were opened with the sound of drums and trumpets. As the devotees caught their first glimpse of Baba Mahakal after the elaborate worship and Bhasma Aarti, the temple resonated with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” The atmosphere was filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and sacred mantras.
With the opening of the temple gates, the worshippers performed a ceremonial water offering, using a mixture of milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and fruit juices known as Panchamrit. The initial bell was rung, and water was offered in reverence. Following the camphor aarti, Baba Mahakal was adorned with a crown, and the Bhasma Aarti commenced amid the sounds of cymbals, drums, and conch shells. Baba Mahakal was beautifully decorated with Vaishnav tilak, Trinetra, and Tripund, embodying a regal form.
The chief priest conducted the Mahaarati, and many devotees were present to witness this sacred event. To participate in the Bhasma Aarti, devotees queued from the previous night, dressed in traditional attire; men in dhoti-sola and women in sarees.
According to tradition, the Bhasma Aarti is offered to Baba Mahakal by the Mahanirvani Akhada. It is believed that after receiving the sacred ash, Baba Mahakal reveals his form to the devotees. This event attracts a large number of pilgrims to the holy city of Ujjain.
