Ujjain, March 18: The world-renowned Baba Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain witnessed a divine adornment of the deity on the Chaturdashi date of the Krishna Paksha in the Chaitra month. Devotees lined up from the night to catch a glimpse of Baba in this form.
At 4 AM, the famous Bhasma Aarti took place, filling the temple premises with devotees. The atmosphere resonated with chants of “Jai Mahakal,” and the joy on the faces of the devotees upon seeing Baba was unmistakable.
The ritual began with Baba’s bath in water during Brahma Muhurat, followed by a grand Bhasma Aarti where sacred ash was offered to Baba. This Aarti is performed by the Mahanirvani Akhara, who chant mantras while presenting the Bhasma to Baba Mahakal. During this time, Bhasma is sprinkled over the Shivling, symbolizing the formless aspect of the divine.
In the Aarti, Baba reveals himself to his devotees in both formless and form aspects. After the Bhasma Aarti, Baba received a water Abhishek, was worshipped with Panchamrit, and was given a special bath with holy ash.
Following this, Baba was adorned beautifully. The deity was decorated with a clear Tripund and a crescent moon on his forehead, adorned with a new crown and a garland of flowers. Fresh Bilva leaves were offered, and colorful flower garlands enhanced the overall beauty of the adornment.
After the adornment, a grand Aarti with camphor was performed, creating an extraordinarily divine experience.
Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India and is considered very special. It is the only south-facing self-manifested Shivling in the world. Strict rules govern entry into the temple; men must wear dhotis, and women are required to wear sarees. Cameras and mobile phones are prohibited during the Aarti.
