Bikaner, March 16: Rajasthan is renowned for its royal culture, forts, and temples. However, one temple stands out due to its unique tradition. Located about 30 kilometers from Bikaner in a place called Deshnok, the Karni Mata Temple, often referred to as the “Temple of Rats,” surprises visitors with its unusual customs. Here, thousands of rats roam freely, and their leftover offerings are considered the most sacred.
Upon entering the temple, visitors are greeted by a different world. Over 25,000 rats, affectionately called ‘Kaba’ by locals, inhabit the premises. These rats can be seen scurrying across the floors, walls, and every corner of the temple. At times, they even pass over the feet of devotees. It is believed that if a rat runs over your foot, it is a very auspicious sign.
Devotees visiting the temple offer milk, sweets, and grains to the rats. Interestingly, once the rats consume these offerings, the remaining food is taken back by the devotees as prasad. Many believe that consuming this prasad brings the blessings of the goddess and leads to happiness and prosperity in life.
The story behind this temple is equally fascinating. According to local beliefs, Karni Mata is considered an incarnation of Goddess Durga. Legend has it that her stepson, Lakshman, drowned in a river. Karni Mata prayed to Yama, the god of death, to bring him back to life. Initially, Yama refused, but moved by her devotion and determination, he granted Lakshman and all male children a rebirth as rats. Since then, it is believed that the rats in this temple are descendants of Karni Mata.
Another belief associated with the temple is that spotting a white rat is extremely fortunate. These white rats are said to symbolize Karni Mata and her sons, prompting devotees to seek them out.
This magnificent temple was built in the early 20th century by Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner. Constructed from marble, the temple features silver doors adorned with beautiful carvings depicting stories related to the goddess.
