Marsala, October 10 (Daily Kiran) : Powerful tornadoes wreaked havoc in the western part of Sicily, Italy, on October 10, 2026. The natural disaster resulted in multiple injuries, significant damage to homes and vehicles, and left a school building severely affected. Eleven individuals were hospitalized, with one 70-year-old man reported in critical condition.
According to reports from the Italian news agency ANSA, the tornadoes impacted the coastal city of Marsala and surrounding areas. These tornadoes formed over the sea and moved inland, causing destruction in residential neighborhoods. The intense winds overturned cars, shattered windows, and scattered debris across various locations.
A school in Marsala suffered substantial damage during the incident, which occurred while 273 children were present. School staff acted swiftly to ensure the safety of all students, although six children sustained minor injuries.
In the nearby area of Petrosino, a car was swept off the road by strong winds and plunged into a ditch, injuring two occupants who were subsequently hospitalized.
Gaetano Galvagno, President of the Sicilian Regional Assembly (ARS), stated, “We are closely monitoring the events in western Sicily; this area is severely affected by adverse weather. My sympathies are with those injured in the tornadoes.”
Meteorologists indicate that unusual weather patterns in the Mediterranean may contribute to such extreme events. Rising sea surface temperatures provide additional energy to storms, potentially increasing their intensity. These conditions are also linked to the rare, stormy weather systems developing in the Mediterranean region.
Reports suggest growing concerns over extreme weather events due to climate change in recent years. Experts believe that rising ocean temperatures and atmospheric changes heighten the risk of sudden severe storms and heavy rainfall in certain areas.
Local authorities and emergency services have initiated relief and rescue operations in the affected regions. Officials are also assessing the damage to buildings and other infrastructure.
