Ranchi, May 25: Two talented athletes from Madhya Pradesh, Dev Kumar Meena and Kuldeep Kumar, made history by setting a new national record in the men’s pole vault at the 29th National Senior Athletics Federation competition. They cleared a height of 5.45 meters, surpassing the previous record of 5.41 meters. This event took place on Sunday in Ranchi. Dev Kumar Meena claimed the gold medal, while Kuldeep Kumar secured the silver medal based on countdown criteria.
The previous record of 5.41 meters was recently set by Kuldeep Kumar in Bhubaneswar. Both athletes also met the qualification standard of 5.25 meters for the Commonwealth Games. The earlier record for this competition was 5.35 meters, established by Dev Kumar Meena last year.
While all eyes were on the sprinters on Saturday, Sunday’s main attraction was the field events. In the long jump, Murali Shreeshankar won the gold medal with a jump of 8.08 meters, exceeding the Commonwealth Games qualification mark of 8.05 meters.
In the men’s high jump, Maharashtra’s Sarvesh Anil Kushare dominated the event, clearing a height of 2.28 meters, which was well above the Commonwealth Games standard of 2.22 meters. Kushare also equaled the competition record previously held by Tejaswin Shankar. He attempted to break the national record of 2.29 meters by raising the bar to 2.30 meters but failed in all three attempts. Silver medalist Aadarsh Ram also achieved the Commonwealth Games qualification mark of 2.22 meters.
Tejas Ashok Shirse, representing Reliance, excelled in the men’s 110-meter hurdles, winning gold with a time of 13.50 seconds. He improved his own meet record of 13.61 seconds but fell short of the Commonwealth Games qualifying time of 13.39 seconds.
Earlier in the morning session, Haryana’s Ravina won the gold medal in the women’s 10,000-meter race walk with a time of 44:29.66 seconds, surpassing the Commonwealth Games qualification time of 44:44.58 seconds.
