Delhis Education Minister Launches Transparent Admission Process for Underprivileged Children

New Delhi, April 6: Delhi’s Education Minister Ashish Sood announced the launch of a computerized lottery system for admissions to private non-aided schools for the academic year 2026-27. This initiative, aimed at ensuring fair access for economically weaker sections (EWS), disadvantaged groups (DG), and children with special needs, took place at the Old Secretariat on Monday. The draws were conducted in the presence of parents and other stakeholders to maintain transparency and fairness.

Following the computerized draw, Minister Sood emphasized the Delhi government’s commitment to providing every eligible child with quality education in a fair and transparent manner. He noted that this year, technical improvements and software developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) have effectively reduced duplicate and erroneous applications through Aadhaar-based verification. This has resulted in increased opportunities for genuine beneficiaries.

Sood highlighted a significant increase in the total number of seats available this year. The number of schools has risen from 2,219 to 2,308 compared to the previous year. Seats under the EWS/DG category have increased from 44,045 to 48,092, while the seats for the CWSN category rose from 6,471 to 7,609. Overall, the total number of seats has grown from 50,516 to 55,701, marking an increase of 5,185 seats.

The education department received a total of 139,524 applications this year. Of these, 138,536 applications were fully completed for the EWS/DG category, while the CWSN category saw an increase in completed applications from 904 to 988.

Minister Sood clarified that once the results are finalized after the draw, no changes can be made. All necessary precautions have been taken to ensure transparency throughout the process.

He added that the draw was conducted transparently via a PowerPoint presentation, with parents actively participating in the lottery, which strengthened their trust in the process. The minister expressed confidence that the Delhi government’s initiatives are now reaching the public in a more transparent manner.

Immediately after the draw, children were allocated to schools. Improvements have been made to the process, allowing parents’ documents to be verified via mobile, reducing the need for repeated visits to schools. The next steps in the process will begin within three days to ensure a smooth admission experience for selected students.

Minister Sood concluded by stating that this draw will provide thousands of children with admission opportunities, ensuring that the selection process is entirely fair, transparent, and merit-based. He reaffirmed the Delhi government’s commitment to promoting inclusivity, transparent selection, and equality in education under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, with this admission process being a significant step in that direction.
