New Delhi, April 24: The Delhi High Court has resolved a petition related to the murder case that occurred during Holi in Uttam Nagar. Following assurances from the police regarding “the best possible security” for the victim’s family, the court made its decision.
Justice Girish Kathpalia, presiding over the single bench, noted the information provided by the police, stating that local authorities are continuously monitoring the situation. Comprehensive measures have been taken to ensure the safety of the victim’s family and witnesses.
During the hearing, Additional Standing Counsel Sanjeev Bhandari and Additional DCP Niharika Bhatt informed the court that security arrangements around the petitioners’ residence have been tightened. The area is under constant surveillance, and police forces have been deployed to prevent any untoward incidents.
The police also reported that CCTV cameras have been installed throughout the area, and police pickets have been set up in surrounding blocks. A dedicated police picket has also been stationed outside the petitioners’ home.
The court directed the SHO to provide his personal mobile number to the petitioners for immediate assistance in case of emergencies.
The petition was filed by Lakshmi Devi and others, seeking to ensure the safety of the victim’s family and witnesses, as well as the removal of inflammatory and objectionable content being circulated on social media.
In response, the police stated that over 250 objectionable videos and posts have been removed so far. The court instructed that any future objectionable content identified by the petitioners should be acted upon immediately according to the law.
The police further indicated that evidence, including video footage related to alleged threats received by the family, has been collected, and the investigation is being conducted by an officer at the ACP level.
After receiving assurances from the police, the senior counsel representing the petitioners expressed satisfaction, leading to the court’s resolution of the petition.
This case is linked to the murder of 26-year-old Tarun Kumar during Holi last month in Uttam Nagar. According to the police, a minor dispute over water balloons escalated into a violent clash between two groups. Tarun Kumar was attacked with sticks, rods, bricks, and stones by several individuals, resulting in his death.
Previously, the Supreme Court of India had declined to hear a petition seeking court-monitored investigation in this matter, advising the petitioners to contact the police commissioner. Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission has also taken cognizance of the incident, issuing notices to the relevant authorities and directing them to ensure a fair investigation, preserve evidence, and assess the safety of the victim’s family.
