New Delhi, February 18: The Delhi High Court has issued notices to the Delhi Police, the central government, the Delhi government, and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) regarding the case of over 800 missing persons. This action comes in response to a new petition filed by Jayita Deb Sarkar.

During the hearing on Wednesday, the division bench, led by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar and Justice Tejas Karia, directed the relevant authorities to file their responses within four weeks. The next hearing is scheduled for March.

Previously, on February 11, the High Court had sought responses from the authorities concerning a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).

A report claimed that more than 800 individuals went missing in Delhi within just 15 days last month. This alarming figure includes 191 minors and 616 adults, raising significant concerns among the public.

On February 6, the Delhi Police dismissed the report, stating that the data had been misrepresented to incite fear among the populace. They warned that strict legal action would be taken against those spreading misinformation.

However, on February 9, the NHRC took suo motu cognizance of the issue. The NHRC stated that if the report is accurate, it constitutes a serious violation of human rights. Consequently, the commission issued notices to the Chief Secretary of Delhi and the Commissioner of Delhi Police, requesting a detailed report.

The opposition has also raised questions about the government’s handling of the situation. The Aam Aadmi Party remarked, “All four engines of the government have failed in ensuring the safety of your children, so take care of yourself and your children.”
