Delhi High Court Criticizes WFI for Disqualifying Wrestler Vinesh Phogat

New Delhi, May 22: The Delhi High Court has reprimanded the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) over its decision to disqualify Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat. The court emphasized the importance of respecting motherhood in the country, highlighting that the WFI’s outdated selection criteria are concerning.

The High Court has directed the central government to form an expert committee to evaluate Vinesh and ensure her participation in the upcoming Asian Games selection trials. Vinesh is making a comeback after a maternity break.

Notably, the WFI had issued a ‘show cause notice’ to Vinesh, accusing her of indiscipline and violations of anti-doping regulations, and posed four questions for her response. Additionally, the WFI imposed a ban on her participation in any domestic competitions until June 26, 2026.

Due to this decision, Vinesh was unable to compete in the National Open Ranking Tournament. She approached the WFI seeking permission to participate in the trials, but her appeal was ignored.

The WFI rejected her request to join the National Open Ranking Tournament trials, citing ongoing disciplinary action against her under WADA’s Rule 5.6.1. According to the WFI, athletes returning from retirement must complete a notice period of at least six months before participating in any tournament.

Subsequently, Vinesh filed a petition in court, appealing to be included in the trials scheduled for May 30 and 31 for the Asian Games. She requested the court’s intervention after being declared ineligible by the Wrestling Federation of India. However, during the initial hearing, the court declined to issue any interim orders, stating it could not provide directives without hearing the WFI’s side.
