New Delhi, August 27: Former South African cricketer Dean Elgar, who retired from international cricket, has announced his decision to completely part ways with professional cricket after the current season. Elgar stated he will retire following the conclusion of the 2026 County Championship season.
According to ESPNcricinfo, Elgar expressed, “I believe this is the right time for me to say goodbye to professional cricket. I am no longer young; I have turned 39. There are many things happening at home with my young family, which is growing rapidly. It’s time for me to be present for my partner and children.”
Elgar reflected on his journey, saying, “It has been a great journey so far. It’s not over yet, but at the end of the season, I will retire. I feel fortunate to have represented my country for twelve years. Captaining South Africa has been one of the proudest moments of my career.”
Dean Elgar bid farewell to international cricket in January 2024, with his final series against India. After retiring from international play, he signed with Essex for the County Championship. After three successful years with the team, he has now decided to retire from cricket entirely.
Looking back on his international career, Elgar played 86 Test matches, scoring 5,347 runs in 152 innings, including 14 centuries and 23 half-centuries. Additionally, he scored 104 runs in 7 innings across 8 One Day Internationals. He also captained South Africa in 18 Test matches.
