DDA to Revitalize 77 Water Bodies in Delhi, LG Issues Directives

New Delhi, May 9: The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Sardar Tarnjit Singh Sandhu, has reviewed a comprehensive presentation by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) regarding the revitalization, restoration, and long-term conservation of water resources within the National Capital Region.

This presentation was made following directives issued by the Lieutenant Governor about a week ago. Sandhu instructed officials to swiftly implement a solid action plan for the revival and restoration of the city’s invaluable water assets, which are deteriorating rapidly due to encroachments and lack of maintenance.

During the review meeting, officials informed the Lieutenant Governor that the DDA will immediately commence work on the revitalization of 77 water bodies across the capital, while the remaining water resources will be addressed in a phased manner. Of these 77 water bodies, six will be restored within the next 30 days, 48 within 60 days, and the remaining 23 within 90 days. Sandhu emphasized that all plans related to this initiative should be implemented at the grassroots level without delay, adhering strictly to the set timelines.

The first phase of the restoration campaign will focus on the actual revitalization of inactive water bodies through dredging, excavation, and silt removal. Additionally, the cleaning of their catchment areas will be undertaken to maximize rainwater retention. An official from the DDA stated that once revitalized, the second phase will involve strengthening embankments, planting trees, installing fencing, and beautification efforts.

The Lieutenant Governor remarked that Delhi’s lakes, ponds, and other aquatic ecosystems are invaluable environmental assets that play a crucial role in groundwater recharge, ecological balance, and climate adaptation.

On social media, the Lieutenant Governor wrote, “With the onset of summer, I reviewed a presentation provided by the DDA. This presentation was prepared based on my directives to swiftly implement a solid action plan for the revival and restoration of Delhi’s invaluable, yet rapidly deteriorating water resources.”

The DDA is set to begin work on 77 water bodies immediately, with six to be restored in the next 30 days, 48 in 60 days, and the remaining 23 in 90 days.

Additionally, discussions were held on other significant development initiatives aimed at transforming suburban areas like Dwarka, Rohini, and Narela. I instructed officials to ensure that all plans are implemented immediately and that the established deadlines are strictly followed.
