DBT Growth Soars 90 Times in a Decade; India Leads in Real-Time Payments

New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced on Thursday that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) has witnessed an increase of over 90 times in just one decade.

The Finance Minister shared on the social media platform X that India is the global leader in real-time payments, with transactions exceeding ₹260 lakh crore in the financial year 2024-25.

In her post, Sitharaman stated, “Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, DBT transfers have grown from ₹7,368 crore in 2013-14 to ₹6.83 lakh crore in 2024-25, marking an increase of more than 90 times. This has ensured that every rupee reaches every citizen.”

She added that India leads the world in real-time payments, registering over ₹260 lakh crore in transactions during 2024-25, with approximately 18,600 crore transactions conducted annually by volume.

The Finance Minister described India’s technological journey over the past 11 years as nothing short of a revolution.

“India has become a hub for digital innovation, tech-based governance, and global trust. From manufacturing to space technology, digital payments to rural connectivity, the transformation is clear, impactful, and lasting,” she emphasized.

She further mentioned that this change is not just about devices and platforms but also about seamless governance, citizen empowerment, and building a tech-first developed India.

According to RBI Deputy Governor M. Rajeshwar Rao, 55.44 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened in India, with 56 percent belonging to women. The total deposits in these accounts crossed ₹2.5 lakh crore as of 21 May this year.

In the financial year 2024-25, digital payments grew by 35 percent annually, reaching 60.81 crore transactions daily, with UPI contributing 83.73 percent.

He added that UPI has played a significant role in promoting financial inclusion.
