Havana, May 29: The United States has no solid reason to attack Cuba, stated Carlos Fernández de Cossío, Cuba’s Deputy Foreign Minister. He emphasized that such an action would only lead to death, destruction, and significant loss.
In response to a report from the American magazine Politico, Fernández de Cossío posted on social media platform X, questioning, “Is killing people, injuring them, spreading devastation, and causing suffering a valid reason? Especially when it involves a certain risk to one’s own people?”
According to a report by the Xinhua news agency, he accused the magazine of inciting the U.S. towards war. He also criticized claims that the U.S. military is prepared to attack Cuba and is merely waiting for “Donald Trump’s final approval.”
A report published by Politico on Wednesday indicated that the Pentagon has been preparing troops and weapons for a potential military strike on Cuba for several months.
Since the beginning of 2026, the U.S. has taken several new measures against Cuba, including imposing sanctions on countries that supply oil to the island. Additionally, further restrictions have been placed on various Cuban entities and officials.
On May 20, the U.S. Southern Command announced that the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group had arrived in the Caribbean region, which includes an aircraft carrier, its air wing, and at least one guided-missile destroyer. On the same day, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a case against Raúl Castro, a leader of the Cuban Revolution, accusing him of involvement in the downing of two planes belonging to the group “Brothers to the Rescue” in 1996.
Recent international media reports have also noted an increase in U.S. surveillance and intelligence flights around Cuba.
