Ahmedabad, May 22: The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) concluded their IPL 2026 campaign in an unexpected manner. On Thursday, they suffered a staggering 89-run defeat against the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, marking their largest loss in terms of runs in IPL history.
Previously, CSK’s biggest defeat came in 2013 when they lost to the Mumbai Indians by 60 runs. Chasing a daunting target of 230 runs set by GT, CSK collapsed for just 140 runs. Notably, Sanju Samson failed to open his account.
Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad also had a disappointing outing, scoring only 16 runs off 7 balls before being dismissed. Urvil Patel was out for a duck, while Matthew Short managed 24 runs off 14 balls before falling to Kagiso Rabada. Karthik Sharma contributed 19 runs off 15 balls, and Dewald Brevis could only muster 8 runs. Shivam Dube provided some fireworks towards the end, scoring 47 runs off 17 balls, including 4 fours and 4 sixes, but lacked support from his teammates.
The performance of CSK’s bowlers was equally underwhelming. Spencer Johnson took just one wicket for 47 runs in his 4 overs. Anshul Kambhoj was once again expensive, conceding 56 runs while taking only one wicket in his 4 overs. Noor Ahmad was targeted by GT’s batsmen, giving away 41 runs in his 3-over spell.
Injuries plagued CSK throughout the season. MS Dhoni missed the entire season due to injury, and Jamie Overton had to leave the tournament at a crucial time because of his injury. Khalil Ahmed also managed to play only 5 matches in IPL 2026 due to fitness issues.
