Pathanamthitta, June 15: The CPI(M) has decided to limit disciplinary action against A. Padmakumar, the former president of the Travancore Devaswom Board, to suspension in connection with the Sabarimala gold theft case. Following his arrest, he was jailed but later granted bail.
The announcement was made by Thomas Isaac, a former finance minister and member of the central committee. Sources indicate that there was pressure on the party to determine the course of action against Padmakumar, particularly due to his alleged warning that he would reveal several matters if strict disciplinary measures were taken against him.
Padmakumar reportedly told close associates that he had many revelations to make and even hinted at writing an autobiography, which has fueled speculation about potential disclosures related to the controversy.
The issue sparked intense debate at the Pathanamthitta district secretariat, where some leaders argued that stringent action was necessary. Party leaders allegedly stated that given the seriousness of the allegations linked to the Sabarimala gold controversy, CPI(M) could not proceed without taking strict disciplinary steps.
Recommendations from the district secretariat were later presented to the district committee for consideration. However, after discussions, the party opted for suspension rather than harsher measures.
The Sabarimala gold controversy has become politically sensitive, involving accusations related to the management of temple assets and administrative decisions. Padmakumar, a former president of the Travancore Devaswom Board, is under investigation in connection with these developments.
