CPI-M in Kerala Finalizing Candidates for Upcoming Assembly Elections

Thiruvananthapuram, March 4: The ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in Kerala is entering a decisive phase this week as it prepares to finalize candidates for the upcoming assembly elections. Meetings of the state secretariat and committee will take place on Thursday and Friday.

According to a senior party leader, who wished to remain anonymous, a draft list of candidates will be prepared after two days of discussions. This list will then be sent to 14 district committees for further deliberation.

Feedback from these committees will be returned to the state committee for approval, paving the way for an official announcement by State Secretary M.V. Govindan early next week.

Party sources indicate that the selection of candidates follows a strategic plan that balances the likelihood of winning, organizational discipline, and leadership transitions.

In constituencies considered safe for the party, CPI-M has primarily adhered to a two-term system to facilitate generational change. Under this approach, A.N. Shamsheer was recently inducted from Thalassery, a political stronghold of former state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. Speculation is growing about senior leaders like K.K. Shailaja contesting elections.

Insiders suggest that while the two-term principle remains a broad guideline, exceptions may be made in certain constituencies where specific candidates have a significantly higher chance of winning.

At the national level, the party’s Politburo has reportedly decided that only one member from the top body will contest in the Kerala elections—Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. This effectively excludes other senior Politburo leaders, including A. Vijayaraghavan, whose name had been circulating in media discussions.

Notably, the emerging list of candidates does not include several prominent leaders, such as M.V. Jayarajan from Kannur, E.P. Jayarajan, P. Jayarajan, and former Finance Minister Thomas Isaac. This signals the party’s intention to alter its electoral strategy. Despite this upheaval, the leadership remains confident.
