Thiruvananthapuram, March 5: The ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has expelled former MLA P.K. Sasi from the party. This decision was made on Thursday. Sasi, who previously represented the Palakkad region, had disagreements with party leadership after not being given a chance in the 2021 assembly elections. His exclusion from the electoral race led to dissatisfaction among his supporters, straining his relationship with state leadership.
The party attempted to placate him by appointing him as the chairman of the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation. However, Sasi resigned from this position last month, fueling speculation about his complete separation from the party.
His expulsion came shortly after he attended a meeting of disgruntled CPI-M workers in his hometown of Palakkad. During this gathering, Sasi criticized the district leadership sharply. Within an hour of the meeting, the state leadership announced his expulsion from the party.
Party sources indicated that Sasi’s participation in the dissenters’ meeting and his criticism of the organization were viewed as serious violations of party discipline. He had previously described the meeting as one of self-respecting revolutionaries, stating it was held under duress.
Meanwhile, opposition leader V.D. Satheesan remarked that the CPI-M had previously cleared Sasi of allegations related to moral decay that surfaced a few years ago.
This incident has intensified political turmoil in Palakkad district, where, despite a strong organizational structure, internal dissent within the CPI-M has periodically emerged. Palakkad, which consists of 12 assembly constituencies, has been a stronghold for the CPI-M, winning 10 seats in the 2021 elections. However, it faced a significant defeat in the local body elections held in December, leading to a growing faction of dissenters. The upcoming assembly elections will reveal the future dynamics of the party in the region.
