Tenkasi, October 7 (Daily Kiran) : The popular Courtalam Waterfall in Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu, is currently closed to visitors as authorities have resumed repair work that was left unfinished at the start of the last tourism season. The flow of water has decreased, allowing workers to safely continue construction at this well-known bathing site.
Officials stated that the repairs aim to strengthen the bathing area and protect it from damage during flooding. Large stones are being placed at the base of the waterfall, where maintenance was halted previously to accommodate tourists. Renovation efforts began last year when the old arch over the main waterfall was removed, and a new, larger arch was constructed nearby. Additionally, stones are being laid in the lower bathing area.
Due to the onset of the tourist season before the completion of the repairs, authorities had temporarily allowed visitors to bathe in the waterfall. Consequently, some parts of the project remained unfinished. Now, with the water flow diminishing, workers have returned to complete the remaining tasks.
During the ongoing construction, access to the main falls has been restricted, preventing visitors from entering the area where stones are being laid. Currently, very little water is flowing in the section designated for men, as the flow is being diverted to allow workers to lay stones and finish repairs to the bathing surface.
To mitigate damage from floodwaters, large stones are being installed. Officials have indicated that completing the work before the northeast monsoon begins is a top priority.
As a result of the closure, tourists will not be able to access the main falls or bathe there until the repairs are finished. Officials have stated that bathing will be permitted once the repair work is complete, although no specific reopening date has been provided. The timeline for reopening will depend on the completion of the ongoing construction.
The latest work builds upon last year’s renovations, which included unfinished stone-laying and measures to ensure the safety of the bathing area during heavy water flow. Currently, the redirection of remaining water has enabled repairs to be carried out just below the waterfall. Authorities have maintained access restrictions to continue these essential works.
