Lucknow, March 17: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav have demanded that the founder of the Bahujan Samaj Party, Kanshi Ram, be awarded the Bharat Ratna. In response, Uttar Pradesh minister Asim Arun expressed his views during an interview with a news agency on Tuesday.
He stated that Congress has consistently undermined the interests and aspirations of the Dalit community. According to Arun, the Congress party has historically exploited the Dalit community for its political gain. Once the Dalit community recognized this political manipulation, they distanced themselves from both Congress and the Samajwadi Party. Now, these parties are attempting to regain attention from the Dalit community through such tactics.
Arun further noted that Kanshi Ram raised his voice against the oppression of Dalits, leading a movement across North India. He traveled extensively, calling for unity against the injustices faced by the Dalit community. This movement eventually transformed into a national party known as the Bahujan Samaj Party. Unfortunately, Arun lamented, neither Congress nor the Samajwadi Party has ever prioritized the welfare and prosperity of the Dalit community.
He recalled that when Kanshi Ram passed away, neither Congress nor the Samajwadi Party representatives attended his memorial. Moreover, when Rahul Gandhi had the political clout, he changed the names of various institutions associated with Kanshi Ram. After Kanshi Ram’s death, Mayawati had called for him to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, but Congress objected, claiming that the award is reserved for individuals of national significance.
In light of these events, the Dalit community has chosen to overlook both Congress and the Samajwadi Party. As these parties find themselves politically marginalized, they are now trying to reconnect with the Dalit community and remember Kanshi Ram. Arun emphasized that this strategy will not benefit either party.
He mentioned that the BJP is currently honoring prominent figures, including Kanshi Ram. The minister clarified that they are not diminishing the respect owed to these individuals. Instead, they are committed to recognizing those who were sidelined during the tenures of the Samajwadi Party and Congress.
Arun challenged Congress members, asking why they did not take any steps to award Kanshi Ram the Bharat Ratna when they were in power. He asserted that the Dalit community understands their motives and will not be deceived this time.
Additionally, he addressed the issue of cylinder shortages, stating that the central government has confirmed an adequate energy supply. However, given the current situation, he urged the need for prudent energy usage. He expressed gratitude to the central government and the Ministry of External Affairs for ensuring that oil tankers are reaching their destinations without any shortages.
