Jaipur, August 7: The Congress party has made significant changes to its AICC secretaries team working alongside the General Secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh. Six current office bearers have been removed and replaced with new leaders.
Among those relieved of their duties is Dheeraj Gurjar, a close supporter of Rajasthan leader Sachin Pilot, who has been associated with the Uttar Pradesh unit for nearly seven years.
In his place, former Rajasthan MLA Jagdish Chandra Jangid has been appointed, who is considered a close ally of former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.
Jangid has been appointed as AICC Secretary and will work alongside the General Secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh. The newly appointed AICC secretaries for Uttar Pradesh include Jagdish Chandra Jangid, Abhishek Datt, Kunal Chaudhary, Sanjeev Arya, Varun Chaudhary, and Abdul Mannan.
These leaders will replace Dheeraj Gurjar, Neelanshu Chaturvedi, Pradeep Narwal, Rajesh Tiwari, Satyanarayan Patel, and Taukeer Alam, who have been relieved of their responsibilities.
Dheeraj Gurjar was first appointed as AICC Secretary in 2019 during Rahul Gandhi‘s presidency. Following organizational changes, Gurjar was assigned to work with Priyanka Gandhi and continued to fulfill his duties in Uttar Pradesh. His responsibilities remained intact even after Mallikarjun Kharge became the Congress President, and he was reappointed as co-in-charge secretary for Uttar Pradesh in 2024.
Gurjar was the only leader from Rajasthan among the six AICC secretaries initially appointed for Uttar Pradesh. With Jangid’s appointment, the party maintains representation from Rajasthan in its Uttar Pradesh organizational structure, albeit through a different leader.
Political analysts believe that besides Gurjar’s long tenure, the changing dynamics of the organization and politics also played a role in this reshuffle.
Dheeraj Gurjar, a former Congress MLA from the Jehanabad constituency in Bhilwara district, is considered close to Priyanka Gandhi and is associated with the Sachin Pilot faction within Rajasthan Congress.
Before entering mainstream electoral politics, he began his career through NSUI and Youth Congress.
Jagdish Chandra Jangid, a former Congress MLA from Sadulshahar, is regarded as one of the prominent OBC leaders in Rajasthan Congress. A graduate of St. Stephen’s College in Delhi and a practicing lawyer, he is generally seen as part of Ashok Gehlot’s faction.
Sources indicate that his appointment as AICC Secretary with responsibilities for Uttar Pradesh is viewed as part of Congress leadership’s efforts to strengthen the organization while bringing a significant OBC face to the forefront for important political responsibilities.
