Kolkata, August 7: West Bengal witnessed its inaugural ‘Tricolor Rally’ on Friday. This event, held in August, was initiated a few years ago by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, the previous Trinamool Congress government did not organize it due to opposition from the ruling party at that time.
Following a change in government after the West Bengal Assembly elections earlier this year, the new administration decided to host the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ program this month.
On Friday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari led a rally from the Survey Building in Alipur to Hazra Crossing in South Kolkata to kick off the event. Participants proudly waved the national tricolor. Other cabinet members present included the state’s Minister of Industry and Commerce, Tapas Roy, and the Minister of School Education, Deepak Barman.
In his closing speech, the Chief Minister expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming enthusiasm of the numerous participants. He announced that a similar rally is scheduled for August 10 at the Birla Planetarium in central Kolkata, expecting around 50,000 attendees.
According to him, the rally aims to instill a sense of nationalism and patriotism among the people. He remarked that West Bengal now has a nationalist government and extended early Independence Day greetings to all residents of the state.
On the eve of the upcoming Independence Day (August 15), the Chief Minister will address the public via All India Radio. Historically, the Chief Minister’s radio address was a significant part of the Independence Day celebrations in West Bengal. From 1977 to 2011, during the 34 years of Left Front rule, the Chief Minister consistently addressed the public on this occasion.
However, from 2011 to 2026, during the 15 years of Trinamool Congress governance, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee refrained from this tradition. With the recent change in government, the current Chief Minister has taken the initiative to revive this long-standing practice.
