Nagpur, September 22 (Daily Kiran) : Pressure is mounting in Maharashtra for a formal declaration of drought. Members of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition plan to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to push for this critical announcement across the state. Balwant Wankhede, a Congress MP from Amravati, shared details of their strategy.
Wankhede stated that if the Prime Minister declares a drought, the coalition will celebrate similarly to how they lit diyas on Modi’s birthday. He expressed frustration with the state government, which has yet to submit a proposal to the central government. “The agriculture minister mentioned yesterday that he would send a letter to the center. The government is delaying action while both the administration and the public agree that a drought should be declared,” he said.
When asked about his response if the Prime Minister acts promptly, Wankhede reiterated the plan to light diyas in celebration if farmers receive compensation soon.
Many districts in Maharashtra have suffered significant agricultural damage this year due to insufficient rainfall, leaving crops parched. The opposition continues to demand that the government declare a drought and provide immediate aid to affected farmers.
The MVA coalition accuses the state government of stalling the declaration, noting that no formal proposal has been submitted to the central authorities, despite the dire ground realities resembling a drought situation.
