Bhopal, July 21: On the second day of the monsoon session in Madhya Pradesh, Congress legislators staged a symbolic protest within the assembly premises, expressing their dissent against the state government. During the demonstration, Congress members carried a ‘symbolic bier’ into the assembly, accusing the government of ignoring pressing public issues while prioritizing controversial topics.
The assembly is currently discussing eight bills, including the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill. There was a heated exchange between the ruling party and the opposition regarding the UCC bill, with Congress members vehemently opposing it.
Additionally, the finance department is set to present the first supplementary budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 during the session. Congress leaders have alleged that the state government is turning a blind eye to the problems faced by the common people while engaging in politics over contentious issues.
During the protest, Congress legislators displayed posters accusing the government of neglecting farmers and engaging in divisive politics. They emphasized that farmers, unemployed youth, and the general public in the state are grappling with various issues, yet the government focuses on topics that divide society rather than addressing their concerns.
Several committee reports, including those from the petitions and grievances committee, subordinate legislation committee, public enterprises committee, government assurances committee, women and child welfare committee, local bodies and panchayati raj accounting committee, agricultural development committee, and backward classes welfare committee, are also expected to be presented in the house.
Moreover, ministers from departments such as women and child development, social justice, energy, renewable energy, MSME, higher education, and tourism will present their annual reports and notifications in the assembly.
During the proceedings, two significant issues are likely to be raised under the ‘attention’ proposal. Meanwhile, the state government will defend its legislative agenda, including the UCC, asserting it as a crucial step towards equality and reform. All eyes will be on the political and policy implications of this session in the coming days.
