New Delhi, August 9: The ongoing debate surrounding the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2026 (FCRA Bill) has intensified as Congress MP K.C. Venugopal stated on Sunday that the party remains steadfast in opposing this “unconstitutional bill.” The bill is yet to be presented in Parliament.
However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised questions about Congress’s opposition, accusing the party of attempting to alter the country’s demographics.
Speaking to reporters, Congress leader Venugopal remarked, “This FCRA Bill targets minorities, as the central government’s intentions are crystal clear. We will not allow such ‘constitutionally objectionable’ legislation to pass. That is our stance.”
In response to Congress’s dissent, BJP spokesperson R.P. Singh questioned, “Why is Congress opposing the FCRA Bill?”
He added, “Congress is opposing the bill because they want to change the demographics of our country. They desire religious conversions, which is why they are against it. In reality, they aim to collaborate with foreign forces to alter the country’s demographics and engage in political maneuvering.”
The BJP leader expressed hope that the opposition would recognize the significance of their protests. However, he emphasized that bills should be passed in the interest of the nation. Whether it pertains to legislation concerning judges, the FCRA Bill, or delimitation and women’s reservation bills, all bills that serve the nation’s interest should be debated and passed.
Meanwhile, India dismissed comments made by a section of the international community, including U.S. lawmakers, regarding the amendment to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act. The Indian government reiterated that legislative matters concerning India are internal affairs decided by Parliament.
