New Delhi, August 5: Congress MP Manish Tewari has submitted a notice for a suspension of proceedings in the Lok Sabha, requesting a discussion on the anti-defection law. In a letter addressed to the Lok Sabha Secretary, Tewari expressed his intention to raise an urgent matter for discussion.
He stated, “I seek permission to present a proposal to suspend the House proceedings for the purpose of discussing the framework of a new anti-defection law. I propose that this House suspend question hour, zero hour, and all other scheduled business for the day.”
Tewari emphasized that the law should prevent opportunistic and large-scale defections without genuine ideological or policy differences. He urged the government to allow a comprehensive discussion on this important issue by suspending today’s proceedings.
Earlier, on July 28, Tewari had also submitted a notice for a suspension of proceedings in the Lok Sabha. He had called for a discussion regarding the alleged use of pellet guns by Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel during a student march on July 20. Tewari noted that over 80 individuals were injured during the protest against allegations of exam paper leaks.
In his notice to the Lok Sabha Secretary, Tewari requested the suspension of scheduled proceedings, considering the issue as one of urgent public interest. He stated, “I request permission to bring a proposal to suspend the House proceedings to discuss an urgent matter.”
In his letter, Tewari proposed that the House suspend question hour, zero hour, and all other scheduled business to discuss the alleged use of pellet guns by RAF against unarmed student protesters during the march on July 20, which resulted in over 80 injuries. He asserted that minimal force should have been used during the peaceful protest, yet excessive force was employed, violating citizens’ constitutional rights. This necessitates immediate parliamentary discussion on accountability for the authorities and compensation for the victims.
