Congress MP Imran Masood Defends Freedom Struggle Contributions Amid Controversy

New Delhi, August 21: Congress MP Imran Masood has sharply responded to comments made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the Congress Working Committee’s proposal related to ‘Vande Mataram.’ Masood emphasized that the Congress party will uphold the ideology and policies that guided the struggle for India’s independence. He asserted that the contributions of all communities and leaders during the freedom movement cannot be overlooked or denied.

Questioning Shah’s remarks, Masood pointed out that the historical facts referenced contradict the ideologies of the BJP and RSS in several instances. He claimed that until 1941, there were numerous examples of political collaboration between the Hindu Mahasabha and the Muslim League.

Referencing Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the Congress MP noted that he served as the Finance Minister in A.K. Fazlul Huq’s government. Masood also highlighted the political dynamics of Sindh province and events related to the Muslim League during that period. He accused some individuals of forming political alliances with the British while the Congress was leading the freedom movement against colonial rule.

On the topic of ‘Vande Mataram,’ Masood stated that the song has been sung at Congress events for a long time. Discussions about its inclusion began in 1937, with the advice of Rabindranath Tagore being significant in the decision-making process. He mentioned that Subhas Chandra Bose, then Congress President, had formally sought Tagore’s counsel. Masood questioned whether the contributions of these great leaders could be diminished in terms of patriotism.

He raised concerns about how the responsibility for patriotism could rest solely with one organization or ideology. The history of the freedom movement is extensive, with diverse ideologies and communities contributing to it.

In response to reports regarding actions against non-Marathi-speaking drivers in Maharashtra, Masood stated that no language should be imposed forcefully. Language should be learned through love and understanding, not through coercion. If there is an expectation for someone to learn a language, it should be approached with explanation and a positive environment. He emphasized that respect for language and the desire to learn should be nurtured through affection, not force.

On the occasion of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s birth anniversary, Masood recalled his significant contributions to the nation, asserting that Congress has honored the great leader’s legacy.

Masood also leveled serious allegations against individuals associated with the RSS concerning educational institutions. He accused them of harming the country’s educational framework and linked the recent paper leak incidents to those affiliated with the RSS.
