Chennai, May 6: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) announced on Tuesday that the final decision regarding support for the Tamilaga Vetrikazhagam (TVK) will be left to its Tamil Nadu unit. Vijay, the leader of TVK, has sought Congress’s backing to form a government in the state.
Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal stated that the election results in Tamil Nadu clearly indicate that the public desires a secular government that fully adheres to the Constitution. He emphasized that Congress aims to ensure that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or its allies do not play any role in the next government.
Venugopal mentioned that the decision will be made in accordance with the sentiments of the people. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee has been granted the authority to make the final call.
In the recent assembly elections, no party secured a clear majority. A total of 118 seats are needed for a majority in the 234-seat assembly. TVK emerged as the largest party with 108 seats, but it is still 10 seats short of a majority. This significant performance marks a major shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, which has been dominated by the DMK and AIADMK in the past.
With support from youth and urban voters, Vijay’s party has become a key player in the race to form the government. TVK is now attempting to forge alliances with other parties.
Sources indicate that Vijay has engaged in discussions with Congress leadership regarding support. Following its electoral success, TVK has claimed the right to form the government and has met with the Governor, requesting two weeks to prove its majority in the assembly.
Currently, TVK is still 10 seats away from a majority, intensifying discussions about potential alliances. All eyes are now on which parties or independent legislators will support Vijay’s party.
