Congress Leader Criticizes Proposal to Award Padma Bhushan to Gyanesh Kumar

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury condemns the suggestion to honor Gyanesh Kumar with Padma Bhushan, calling it disrespectful to public sentiments.

Murshidabad, September 26 (Daily Kiran) : Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a prominent Congress leader, expressed strong disapproval regarding the suggestion made by West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya to award Gyanesh Kumar, the Chief Election Commissioner, with the Padma Bhushan honor. Speaking to the media in Murshidabad, Chowdhury stated that such a proposal is an affront to the sentiments of the public.

Chowdhury emphasized that amidst ongoing controversies surrounding the current Election Commission, discussing an award for Kumar trivializes the genuine concerns and feelings of ordinary citizens. He remarked that while every political party has the right to engage in politics, the integrity of Indian democracy and the Election Commission is under scrutiny both domestically and internationally.

He pointed out the growing dissatisfaction among the public regarding Gyanesh Kumar, asserting that it is inappropriate to consider him for such an honor at this time. “Making light of the questions and frustrations raised by the public is unacceptable,” he said, adding that the BJP will eventually face the consequences of its arrogance.

In response to the Prime Minister’s recent ‘Bhajan Clubbing’ event with Gen Z, Chowdhury noted that while such cultural engagements may entertain youth, the government must also address the pressing issues raised by them. He criticized the administration for failing to resolve these concerns, especially in light of recent student protests that turned violent.

Regarding discussions between Mamata Banerjee and CPI(M) leaders, Chowdhury commented that Banerjee likely believes in the necessity of dialogue to strengthen her party and navigate the current political landscape. He mentioned that there is nothing wrong with engaging in conversations, as anyone can reach out to others.

Chowdhury also highlighted that Banerjee had traveled to Delhi for discussions with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, and it is possible that she communicated with CPI(M) leaders over the phone as well.
