Indian Government Forms Special Team to Investigate e-Mudra Security Incident
The Electronics and IT Ministry has established a special team to investigate a security incident related to e-Mudras PKI infrastructure.

New Delhi, October 21 (Daily Kiran) : The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has taken a serious stance regarding a security incident linked to the e-Mudra Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). In response, the ministry has set up a special team to conduct a thorough investigation. Officials emphasized that many of the concerns circulating on social media are misleading and exaggerate the actual impact of the incident.
In a statement released on the social media platform X, the ministry clarified that e-Mudra operates in two distinct areas. The first involves issuing Digital Signature Certificates and e-signature services, which are regulated by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA). The second area consists of issuing digital certificates trusted by major web browsers and operating systems, which are essential for securing websites, software, and online communications.
According to the ministry, the recent security event pertains to the second area of e-Mudra’s operations, which functions under an international trust framework. This framework adheres to global standards and undergoes independent audits, including WebTrust audits conducted by BDO International Limited.
The ministry clarified that it does not play a role in the auditing process of this specific sector. They noted that the incident’s impact on Indian websites and applications has been minimal and short-lived.
The ministry is in continuous contact with all relevant parties to resolve the situation promptly. Additionally, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) has issued an advisory detailing necessary measures to mitigate risks associated with the incident.
Once the investigation concludes, the ministry plans to release comprehensive information regarding the matter. In the meantime, officials urge the public to disregard rumors and misleading claims, encouraging reliance on official information.
